Week 3 NFL Predictions/Fantasy Outlook

Last week showed us that in the NFL, when a new season starts, anything can happen.  A lot of you out there who are already out of your survival pool(Saints, Patriots), know this.  My predictions went along the lines of what happened last year. The general public doesn't get to see what goes on behind the scenes or what coaches may be thinking in terms of what they have in mind for their players and schemes, and it makes fantasy football incredibly hard to play.

Yes, I think not having Sean Payton and Jonathan Vilma greatly affects both sides of the ball for the Saints.  I also think we aren't being told everything about the Wes Welker situation(shocking), so in order to find the deep sleepers or who plays more than the other in the backfield, knowing the coaches matters more than the players.  I also learned that Mike Nolan coaches the Falcons defense, and what I saw on Monday showed that he is incredibly good at causing confusion before the play.

We'll see what happens in week 3, but my suggestion is to follow your gut instinct, even if it proves to be the wrong choice every once in a while.  Last year I didn't have to worry because of guys like Ray Rice, Tony Romo, Jimmy Graham, Frank Gore, and Chicago's defense staying healthy and leading me to a 1st place finish.  This year, F-Jax is out and Spiller looks like the better back anyway, and I'm reaching deep.  So in these articles I may go out on limbs, but it's what I do.  I don't follow the experts, and most of the time, what's "supposed to happen" usually doesn't.

I'm going to simply start listing my projections for players I would start, so if you don't see a specific guy, I'd probably sit him.  I'll also have my prediction for the game.

Giants @ Panthers (Thurs):

Eli Manning: 275 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT(lack of Nicks and Hixon hurts here)

NFL Week 2 Fantasy Outlook and Predictions

Bears @ Packers:
The Pack look to bounce back from their week 1 loss against the Niners, and face a stingy bears defense that is ALWAYS underrated.  Urlacher might be the best pre-snap chess player in the league, and without Greg Jennings, i'll say it, SIT Aaron Rodgers.  I know he was a top 5 pick in most drafts, so you will likely be starting him anyway, but expect a couple picks and being held under 300 yards.  If one player does have a good game against the bears, it'll be Randall Cobb.  I'm starting him in my league, because he's set to line up in the backfield more, and after catching all of his nine targets last week, he may be the next Percy Harvin of the NFL.  For the Bears, Marshall is a start, but don't expect a big game from him with Woodson likely draped all over him.  Forte also is a go, especially with the forecast calling for light rain.  Alshon Jeffery might make more fantasy owners look his way after this week and Michael Bush is a deep league start or desperate flex option especially with his goal line skills.  I like the Bears in this one, 23-20.

Chiefs @ Bills:
I was shocked at how bad Ryan Fitzpatrick played against the Jets last week.  I know they have a good secondary, but his INT's early were just awful passes.  Could have been nerves, and loosing F-Jax is never good for their offense.  The Chiefs also laid an egg at home, but I have to give the Falcons credit for dominating that game with Julio(top 2 receiver this year).  Only thing that worries me about the Falcons is their lack of running game, but then again, the best teams in the league are pass-heavy.  Start Stevie Johnson and C.J. Spiller for the Bills, and for the Chiefs, Bowe and Charles can start.  Keep Hillis on the sideline until he can prove his 50-50 timeshare is worth it, and the receivers after Bowe look more like running backs(McCluster.....).  I don't know what to think about these teams after week 1, but I'll say the Chiefs win, 16-13.

Saints @ Panthers:
I think the Saints can bounce back, and it should be easy against a mediocre Panther team which has a lot of questions, including Cam Newton.  I think he's going to continue his second half struggles from last year in the passing game, but you have to start him and Steve Smith.  Avoid all of their backs until one sticks out as a clear favorite.  Start Brees, Graham, Sproles, Colston, maybe Moore, and possibly Ingram as he looks to be the favorite to get carries, and I think they'll be up the whole game.  34-13 Saints.

Browns @ Bengals:
The poor Bengals had to start in Baltimore, and got clobbered, while the Browns nearly upset the Eagles with a surprising defense.  Start nobody for the Browns, since their line and Weeden look absolutely awful.  BenJarvus had a surprising game against Baltimore, and led me to a week 1 win.  Huge game against Cleveland again, along with A.J. Green, especially with Joe Haden out.  Bengals 24-10, Law-Firm gets in twice.

Vikings @ Colts:
You never want your rookie QB to start off against a D like the Bears, but I still think Luck is the best Rookie QB out there.  I like him, Brown, Wayne, Fleener, and Collie(if he plays) against a bad Vikings D, and on the flipside, the colts also have a bad D.  Start Harvin, Rudolph, AP, and even Ponder if you need to.  Shootout of a game, 35-31 Minnesota. AP and Donald with huge days.

Texans @ Jaguars:
Jaguars get to play a top 5 defense this week, so I'm staying away from all Jags players except MJD, unless you can somehow afford to sit him.  Foster, Johnson, and Schaub all look primed for another good week, and the Texans D will give them plenty of chances to score.  I like Blackmon in the long run, but not this week and especially since Gabbert is still erratic.  Texans big, 34-12.

 Raiders @ Dolphins:
The fins are really bad this year.  Clear favorites for Matt Barkley(unless they decide to work on Tannehill, which I could see their lackluster front office doing), they will loose this game.  Start your Raiders, even the D, and avoid all Dolphin players.  If the game is somehow close, it'll just make the Raiders look bad, even though it is in Miami.  Raiders 23-9.

Cardinals @ Patriots:
Poor Cardinals.  They pulled out a week one win at home against the Seahawks, but now have to travel to Foxborough and play the well-oiled machine that is the Pats, with a QB that has checked out(Kolb).  New England will wipe the floor with them, and the much-improved defense will have a field-day sacking, picking and bashing Kolb.  Start all NE players, and only Fitzgerald for AZ since there will be a ton or garbage time in this one.  45-17 Pats.

Buccaneers @ Giants:
The Giants will try and avoid an 0-2 start, and i think they will against an unknown Tampa team.  The Giants defense didn't look like anything amazing, so I think you can go ahead and start Martin, but I would try to avoid the rest of the team.  Hopefully Nicks, Cruz, and Manning can rebound, and Bradshaw will probably be just as good as last week.  Start all of them, as I think the Giants prevail 31-13.

Ravens @ Eagles:
After the smackdown the Ravens laid on the Bengals in week 1, they clearly look like the team to beat in the AFC.  Now they travel just north to Philly, who looked terrible against a bad Browns team.  Reid blamed the close game on Michael Vick being rusty, which is possible due to his lack of passing attempts in the preseason, but don't expect a big game from him.  I would be scared to start Eagles players besides McCoy, but it looks like Flacco might be an alright QB to start along with Smith, and of course Ray Rice.  The Eagles are pretty stout defensively, so don't expect massive games out of any of their players.  Ravens win 19-17 in a nailbiter.

Cowboys @ Seahawks:
The Cowboys come off a long layover going to the home of the 12th man in Seattle.  The Cowboy offense looked fine-tuned, usually a theme early in the year.  Teams often don't have success in the state of Washington, but I still like the 'Boys in this one.  Start Romo, Bryant, Austin, Ogletree if you have to, and Murray.  They'll have plenty of scoring with a much improved Rob Ryan defense, and Russell Wilson and his Seahawk offense looked very dull against a mediocre Cardinal team last week.  Lynch is probably the only viable start for the 'hawks.  Dallas 27-16.

Redskins @ Rams:
RG3 looked very impressive in his debut against the Saints, going 8-9 against the blitz and looked very composed in a harsh environment.  We all think of the Rams of the two win team from last year, but last week against Matt Stafford, a 5,000 yard passer from last year, St. Louis intercepted him three times.  Beware of all the experts ranking him in the top 10, if not top 5 this week, because I think he comes back to earth.  His ability to run could help, but if you can afford to, sit him.  Alfred Morris was the #1 pickup last week, so it probably means you don't have any other options at running back, so flex start him.  Garcon could be a tricky play, but don't count on another 88 yard touchdown.  Steven Jackson and Amendola(Wes Welker for the Rams) are the only two possible starts I see for the Rams.  If they win the game, look more into Bradford and his other targets.  I'm going out on a limb and saying the Rams win at home, 30-27 in a close one.

Jets @ Steelers:
One of the more intriguing matchups of the week, the seemingly unstoppable Jets offense walks into Heinz field, where the return of Ryan Clark and James Harrison lurk.  New York won't put up over 40 points again, but I think the Sanchez-Hill combination is actually for real.  Shonn Greene is an iffy start, so try and avoid other Jet players until it becomes clear who the real players are.  Revis was cleared from his mild concussion, so be wary of Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown this week against tough cornerbacks.  Jonathan Dwyer was also a huge pickup this week, and I think he is this year's DeMarco Murray.  Some of the latest news coming from Pittsburgh is that Dwyer was held out of practice Wednesday with a foot injury, so Issac Redman could see an increased role if he is ruled out.  Start whichever back gets the green light, as the Jets allowed CJ Spiller to explode for 140 yards on the ground last week.  Steelers win here, but in a tight battle.  21-16.

Titans @ Chargers:
The Chargers come off an ugly win on the road last week in Oakland, and get the Titans at home.  Jake Locker separated his non-throwing shoulder, but is still planning on playing Sunday.  Chris Johnson has been the most mysterious fantasy player the last two years, but I think last week was due to a much improved New England defense and since he only got 11 carries.  He should bounce back, but don't expect too much of an improvement.  Kenny Britt also returns from suspension, who was the NFL's leading receiver last year before going out for the season.  It will be interesting to see who gets most of the targets, but with Wright and Washington in the mix, wait and see if you can on the Locker targets.  Matthews is slated to start, so plug him back in the lineup, and hopefully Rivers and Gates put up numbers of old as well.  I like San Diego at home, 23-17.

Lions @ 49ers:
Sunday Night Football brings back the instant classic near brawl between the two coaches, and this time it's in San Fran.  The Lions looked rusty last week against the Rams, and the Niners are a much better defense.  If you can, sit Stafford, and everyone besides Megatron.  I like the running game for San Fran, and Frank Gore is the anchor for it.  Start him, Davis, Crabtree, and even Alex Smith.  Niners big in this one, 41-21.

Broncos @ Falcons:
Peyton Manning is the same old 4-time MVP we are used to.  He goes into an unfriendly environment on MNF against another stellar QB in Matt Ryan who he has never faced.  The Falcons lost Brent Grimes, arguably their best corner, so I'm expecting a shootout in this one.  It'll take a few plays defensively or on special teams to win this game.  Ryan, Jones, White, and Tony G are starts, Turner is a sit(Denver is pretty good up front, especially with Von Miller), so expect an aerial show.  Peyton, Decker, Thomas, and Tamme can start for the Broncos.  I think Peyton leads a game-winning drive, and they win 27-23.

Week 1 NFL Matchups and Fantasy Outlook

Cowboys v. Giants:
Look for an aggressive Giants' D-Line all over Tony Romo.  If the Cowboys line can protect Romo enough, watch for a Dez Bryant Sportscenter touchdown, or set up the play action pass with DeMarco Murray(hope you have his handcuff, and I think it's Phillip Tanner not Felix jones), and hopefully it's Austin and Bryant getting the endzone snags.  On the flip side, the Giants O-line can protect Eli well, and as long as he keeps the INT's down(don't think Morris Claiborne is Patrick Peterson), Nicks and Cruz will be big.  I'm thinking high scoring game and whoever is up at the end reaps the Running Back reward.  I like The Cowboys in this one actually, So start your Cowboy receivers, Romo(hopefully avoids mistakes), and probably Murray since you drafted him in the 3rd round or higher.  After the G-men line the secondary isn't hard to beat.  I'd actually sit Bradshaw(yes i know he was also a high pick), and Wilson until Coughlin figures out who he's going with.  Eli, Cruz and Nicks are all good plays.

Dolphins @ Texans:
If you drafted Miami running backs, I think they're going to be down the wholle game so look for an emerging receiver for Tannehill when they're behind.  Don't start Miami anything.  Unless it's Fasano, I like him this for this game.  Texan's will have a field day @ home, so start Schaub, Johnson(even though I'm down on him this year), Foster
(derp) and maybe even Tate after Arian racks up 160+ and 2.  Could go Daniels in a deeper league.  Texans big.

Patriots @ Titans: New England has to win this game, they're revolutionized passing, and Tom Brady can
score with anyone.  Even Ridley is a start along with Brady's 4 targets, along with the golden boy himself.
I like the "new look" Patriot defense, but still think CJ2k gets in once or twice, around
60-80 yards, so not ridiculous numbers, so startable.  We don't know about Locker,
Washington or Wright, and with Britt suspended for the game those 2 may be startable
since Britt is out.  The Pats d was terribad last year, but I just don't know how Locker
will do with all the pressure.  Pats by large amounts.

Rams @ Lions: Poor St. Louis having to start at Detroit.  D-Town looked locked in during the preseason,
So big games against a bad d for Staff, Johnson, Smith, Young, and Pettigrew.
Bradford might have a tough time with Detroit's line, since they'll be down I'd sit
Jackson(but you really can't), and your Ram's receivers since we don't know who it is
yet (my money is Amendola). Lions take care of business.

Redskins @ Saints: RG3 doesn't open in a good atmosphere, so his mental toughness will be challenged
immediately.  I think he has it, but it's a risky start.  Fred Davis and Garcon seem like
his targets, but sit all 'skins running backs until Royster or Helu gets the bulk of the carries.  Saints at home means good things
for my Saints-heavy team, Brees, Graham, Ingram (think he's the guy this year), Saints
D(RG3 will make mistakes), Sproles, and Colston.  Thomas might get in on a screen.
Saints all the way in this one.

Colts @ Bears:                I feel sorry for Luck as well as RG3 for their first NFL regular season action
being against stingy defenses, so start all your Bear's, maybe even Hester or
Bush.  Donald Brown I like, but not in this game.  He'll get the checkdowns from
Luck, and might get in the endzone late.  Sit Wayne, Fleener, Luck, and Collie,
don't see much from Indy going to Chicago to try and begin a new era.

Jaguars @ Vikings:              Battle of the bads in week 1.  Should be high scoring, so start Jennings(MJD
will only see limited action), Blackmon (like him this game), and possibly even Gabbert if you're
a super deep league.  Minnesota's D is bad.  Luckily, Jacksonville doesn't
have a good one either, so Harvin, Gerhart(don't think AP plays), Rudolph
(could be this year's Jimmy Graham, but Ponder is no Drew Brees), are all
starts in the Matt Barkley Bowl.  If you have a league that gives more points
for sacks Minnesota's D might be ok.

Bills @ Jets:      Two great defenses.  If the Jets continue to struggle on offense, sit all starters until further
                            notice.  Fred
Jackson will have a huge game, Fitzpatrick may have a hard time finding Johnson on Revis
Island, so unless you aren't deep at receiver, try to sit all but F-Jax.  I think Buffalo wins
                            21-17.

Eagles @ Browns:      Eagles win Big.  Weeden and McCoy are like Whitehurst and Jackson, and T-Rich
is also a sit, banged up and no offensive-line.  Start all Eagles.

Falcons @ Chiefs:    Arrowhead is not an easy place to play, but the finely-tuned passing attack of the
Falcons prevails if it's a nice day outside.  Watch for the weather, because rain will
increase Turner's value.  All Falcons players are starts, even though I have a sneaky
suspicion the Chief's D is underrated and shuts down the high powered dome
offense(Green Bay last year).  Start Charles, Bowe, and Hillis if in a deeper league, but look for a lower-scoring game than you
                                   might think.  Falcons 16-14

49ers @ Packers:   Tough start for both teams.  I think the defenses are sits if you can afford to, but Gore
and Davis are starts.  Don't know who Smith's receiver is yet.  Rodgers, Jennings,
Nelson(even though I think one will have a bad game), Finley, and Benson can also go
(Benson could see limited touches on a pass first team).  Pack in a shootout, 38-31.

Seahawks @ Cardinals:  Seahawks big in this one.  Fitzy might get a garbage score, we don't know what
running back or Quarterback it is in the desert, so sit everything but Fitz.
Seahawks D will be huge, Lynch, even Turbin(if they're up enough), Wilson (my
sleeper), Winslow, and Probably Rice are all start's.

Panthers @ Buccaneers: Can Cam Newton continue his success?  He won't get 14 rushing
touchdowns this year, but should do well against a bad defense.  Start him, Olsen, Smith,
and possibly LaFell.  Deangelo could get extra looks with Stewart questionable so he's a play too.  It will be interesting to see Doug Martin against a bad
defense, and how much Blount is used, since I'm not totally sold on Martin yet.  Start Jackson, Freeman, Martin, and
Williams.  I think the Panthers win but in a close one.

Steelers @ Broncos:  The altitude means Ryan Clark can't play, but the Steeler's always have a great D.
If they get enough oxygen, Wallace, Brown, Roethlisberger, and whatever running
back starts are all good plays, there's only one Champ Bailey.  Peyton is a start,
along with Decker, McGahee, and maybe Tamme or Thomas even though I'm not
sure about him.  I think the Broncos pull it off, 31-24.

Bengals @ Ravens:  Monday Night Football opens with a delectable AFC North matchup, and all the
Fantasy players out there want a high scoring game(unless you have the Ravens D).
A.J. Green, maybe Gresham and the law firm are good to go, but I think it's either
feast or famine for BenJarvus, since he's hurt and Haloti Ngata is staring him down.
Ravens D, Rice, Smith, and maybe Boldin are all plays.  I think the Ravens win @
                                   home.

Chargers @ Raiders:  The other MNF game is just as intriguing.  Some sleepers may emerge in this one.
So-so D's, and pretty good offenses.  I think Rivers and Gates start off well this
year, Matthews is banged up, and either Floyd or Meachem will have a big game.
If McFadden stays healthy, he might be the best back in the league.  Ingram could
slow him down but I doubt it.  Hey-Bey and Moore will also have big games with
a consistent Palmer at the helm.  Chargers win, but it is going to be close since
                                        Norv Turner is their coach.
